IKEA selects contractors for new San Antonio-area store in Texas

RBR Staff Writer Published 15 December 2017

IKEA’s US subsidiary has selected contractors to construct a new San Antonio-area store in Live Oak, Texas which is planned to open in summer 2019.

Houston-based Tribble & Stephens has been hired as construction manager for the site work and store development at Live Oak.

Tribble & Stephens had previously built certain IKEA stores including the ones at Houston and Round Rock.

The new 289,000ft2 IKEA Live Oak store will be built nearly 8km northeast of downtown San Antonio on a 31-acre land at the southwestern corner of Interstate 35 and Loop 1604.

It will have similar architectural design that is seen at other IKEA stores across the world.

IKEA US president Lars Petersson said: “With contractors on board, plans can proceed towards opening the future IKEA Live Oak store.

“This San Antonio-area store will provide a more convenient IKEA shopping experience for current and potential customers throughout South Texas who may live too far from IKEA Houston and IKEA Round Rock.”

Subject to receipt of remaining permits, IKEA US plans to break ground on the new furnishings store in spring 2018.

IKEA says that over 500 jobs related to construction work will be created and around 250 employees will be hired following the store opening.

Earlier, this week, IKEA opened a new store at Grand Prairie in Texas.

The 290,000ft2 IKEA Grand Prairie store was constructed on 30 acres and is the second store of the furnishings retailer in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

IKEA is planning a third store in the region, which is slated to break ground in spring 2018 and aimed to be opened in summer 2019.
